Richard Lee "Dick" Sposito, of Hermitage, formerly of Farrell, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. He lived a full and vibrant life marked by dedication to his family, his community, and the things he loved most. Born on September 1, 1933, in Farrell, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Arthur G. Sposito and Agnes McCauley Sposito.
Dick was a proud 1951 graduate of Farrell High School, where he distinguished himself as an exceptional athlete. His talent on the football field earned him a place in the Erie City-County All-Star Football Game. He was also a three-year letterman in track, advancing to the WPIAL finals for two years and competing at the state level during his senior year. His passion for sports would remain a constant throughout his life.
After high school, Dick continued his education at Shenango Valley Commercial Institute, earning an associate degree in accounting in 1958. He went on to build a strong work ethic that carried him through a diverse career, including roles at Mercer Tube, Sharon Westinghouse as a coil winder, Valley Mould, and National Casting. Ultimately, he dedicated 30 years to the Farrell Post Office, where he rose to the position of Superintendent of Postal Operations. Over 18 years in supervision, he also served as Officer in Charge at both the New Wilmington and Farrell offices.
Sports were a lifelong joy for Dick. He played baseball for the Farrell Moose, Farrell American Legion, and Chaderton Pirates, and competed in softball in the Westinghouse League. While serving his country in the Army during the Korean War, he continued to excel athletically, playing basketball for Company Ordinance and helping secure a post championship at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. He was also an avid bowler, proudly recording a 289 game in the Farrell Post Office League in 1998, and enjoyed many years in mixed leagues at St. Bart's, Horizon Hospital, Sharon Steel, and Thornton Hall Seniors. He also spent many happy hours golfing in the Borlands Golf League and Sharon Moose Golf League.
A devoted sports fan, Dick especially loved Pittsburgh teams—the Steelers, Pirates, Penguins, and Pitt Panthers—while also cheering faithfully for the New York Yankees. Closer to home, he was a diehard supporter of Farrell athletics in all sports.
Dick's commitment to service and community was evident in the many organizations he supported throughout his life. He was a lifetime member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, a former member of the Holy Name Society, and attended Grace Chapel Church. His presence was a constant at Farrell Moose Lodge #55, where he served as past governor and held officer roles for many years. He also served as past president of Shenango Valley Moose Legion #88 and as an officer in Moose District #14. His community involvement extended to Greenville Moose Lodge #276, Apollo Maennerchor, Farrell Italian Home, and the Slovenian Home in Sharon.
He was also deeply engaged in civic and veterans' organizations, holding memberships with Sharon American Legion #299, Sharon Shenango VFW, Hickory VFW, and the Federation of Clubs of Mercer County. For more than 30 years, he was a member of NARFE, supporting fellow federal employees. Dick also gave his time as an officer and board member of AARP #3616, the Sharon Elks, and the Mercer County Federal Employees Credit Union.
Family was at the center of Dick's life. He married Joan Mihalson on March 13, 1954, at Sacred Heart Church. Together, they shared 54 wonderful years of marriage until her passing on February 15, 2009. Though her loss left him heartbroken, Dick often said that the Lord later "dropped an angel in his lap" when he married Betty M. Devine on September 3, 2011. Together, they found companionship, joy, and many shared interest and experiences.
Dick leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory: his son, Dr. Richard S. Sposito and wife Janet of Erie, Pennsylvania; daughters Victoria G. Luchey and husband Jeff of Grapevine, Texas, and Gina M. Sposito of Las Vegas, Nevada; stepson Robert Devine and wife Mari Lynn of Hermitage; and stepdaughter Debra Devine of Hermitage. He is also remembered by his grandchildren, Nick, and Richard R. Sposito, Andrea Sposito and her husband, Kyle Simitoski and Brittany Turney and her husband Matt; step-grandchildren Alena Vollmer and her husband, Mark, Justin Devine, Leann Simonik and her husband, Aaron, Malon Devine, Brandi Carroll-Chechak and her husband, Ted, and Devin Carroll; great-grandchildren Pierce, Preston, and Olivia Turney; and step-great-grandchildren Lyndon Carroll, Madelynn and Abigail Vollmer, Luca Devine, and James R. and Liam Devine.
Dick was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan M. Sposito; his siblings MaryLou Borowicz, Arthur E. Sposito, and Terrance Harry Sposito; his stepmother Margaret Sposito; stepson Jimmy Devine; and grandson Christopher Luchey.
Known to many simply as "Rich," he had a gift for connecting with others. He was the kind of person who liked everyone—and in return, was liked by everyone. He loved his children deeply and often said they were "the greatest in the world." His warmth, humor, and easygoing nature made him a joy to be around.
Over the course of 92 years, Dick left an enduring mark on all who knew him. His life was a testament to loyalty, perseverance, and love—values he lived every day.
