Joseph Paul Smith, of South Point, OH, formerly of Sharon, PA, passed away on Nov. 29, 2015 in the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH, after complications from a double lung transplant in May. He was 66.
Joseph was born in Sharon, PA on October 31, 1949, the son of the late John W. and Elizabeth (Black) Smith. He was a 1967 graduate of Sharon High School and then earned a business degree from Youngstown State University.
In 1983, he founded and was CEO of Pyro-Chem Corporation, South Point, OH, a leading manufacturer of premixed fire retardant mine sealants used in the underground coal mining industry. Joseph was a hard working businessman. He was of Presbyterian faith.
He was the husband of Gailene M. (Miller) Smith. whom he married on July 22, 1988. She survives him at home. He is also survived by his step-son, Devin Garish of South Point, OH, and his grand daughter, Abby Garish, along with his sister, Anne Abbott and her husband, Jim of Elkton, MD. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-son, Matthew Garish.

At his request there will be no calling hours. A Memorial Service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 263 East State St., Sharon, PA 16146, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 12th, 2015 with Rev. Jason Minter officiating. Interment will take place at America's Cemetery, Hermitage, PA. Funeral arrangements by the Harold W. Stevenson Funeral Home, 264 East State St., Sharon.
