John William Joseph Martinko, of Sharon, PA passed away peacefully on Friday, July 22, 2016 at Clepper Manor in Sharon, after an extended illness. He was 88.
John was born in Youngstown, Ohio on June 25, 1928, the son of the late John and Susan (Toman) Martinko. Growing up, he attended the Holy Name of Jesus of Jesus School in Youngstown. He served his country by being in the Merchant Marines and then in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He had worked as a paint sprayer at the former LTV Steel in Youngstown for 37 years. In his younger years, he had worked at the former Ward's Baking Company, also in Youngstown.
John was a member of the Slovenian Home in Farrell and a former board member of M.C.A.R. for 14 years where he was instrumental in starting Cafe MCAR, he also was Treasurer of Polk Parents, Relatives and Friends. In 1995, he was chosen United Way's "Man Of The Year". He enjoyed listening to polka music, doing crossword puzzles, and was a die hard Yankees fan. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann's Catholic Church, Farrell, PA.
He was the husband of Ann (Sansosti) Martinko, whom he married on May 6, 1961. She survives him at home. Also survivng are his daughter, Karen Martinko, of Sharon and her fiance', David Crook, Of Mercer, PA, his son, David John Martinko, of Hermitage, PA, and his sister, Margaret "Margie" Hovanec, of Spring, TX, along with several neices, nephews, and God-children. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Martinko, and his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Pat Martinko.
Donations in his memory may be made to Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann's Church, 601 Roemer Blvd., Farrell, PA 16121 or to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon, 2759 N. Lipkey Rd., N. Jackson, OH 44451.
Friends are invited to call Wednesday, July 27, 2016 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Harold W. Stevenson Funeral Home, 264 E. State St., Sharon, PA 16146.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at at Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann's Catholic Church, Farrell, PA at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 28th, with Rev. Donald Berdis officiating. Burial with Military Honors presented by the Wheatland, Farrell, West Middlesex Honor Guard at St. Anthony's Cemetery, Hermitage PA.
