Alice Joan Wyant Hooks
Joan W. Hooks, 91, of Hermitage, died in her home with her family by her side, on January 19, 2021, of natural causes. She is now free from years of anguish and pain.
Joan was born to Devon Chester Wyant and Alice Lucille Roche Wyant on April 9, 1929 in New Kensington, PA. She grew up in New Kensington and graduated from New Kensington High School. She always looked back fondly on those school days and the activities she was involved in and the many friends she cherished over the years.
Joan was formerly employed by Alcoa Aluminum in New Kensington and the PA Unemployment office in Sharon as well as the Mercer County Housing Authority.
Joan married Christopher(Pete)DeWitt Hooks on August 28, 1948. They were married for 17 years. Pete died on July 8, 1965, leaving Joan a young widow with 3 children to raise on her own. She did a wonderful job, despite the struggle. She chose to never remarry.
She was a terrific Mom who always made every occasion special. There was always music and dancing in our home, as Joan loved to dance and to teach us how to dance. She enjoyed dressing up and going out on the town, whether it be with family or friends. There was always a good time.
She was an exceptional seamstress, making so many of our beautiful dresses as well as draperies and slipcovers.
Joan loved to help with school projects, always urging us to do bigger and more spectacular displays. She enjoyed helping with recitations and speeches, as she always had a song, a poem or a comment for every occasion.
Joan loved to read historical novels and work on the family genealogy. She was so very proud of her noble German heritage and loved to instill that pride in the rest of the family.
She enjoyed coloring and always took such great pride in her creations, always picking just the exact colors needed for each one. Every picture was done with such determination and love and they will be cherished.
We will all miss this beautiful lady so very much. We love you!
