Jeffrey K. Johns, age 63, of Hermitage PA, passed away on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer, with his loving family at his side. Born June 7, 1955 in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of the late James and Georgette Zinsser Johns. He married the former Rebecca Beaver on July 16, 1977 and she survives at home.
Jeff was a 1977 graduate of Westminster College with a Music Education Degree. He managed the Ponderosa Steakhouse on State Street in Hermitage from 1978 til 1999 and then went on to teach music at the Warren City schools, K thru 8th grade and also directed the band and choir.
Jeff loved music and was an accomplished violinist. He played violin for the Greenville Symphony Orchestra, Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, Warren Philharmonic Orchestra and many area musicals. He also gave private lessons at Marks Music store and was a free lance violinist. Jeff also enjoyed golf, reading and bike riding.
He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he was very active in their music program and played in many Christmas Cantatas.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter Laura Sonney and her husband Josh of Sharon, PA, a son Matthew Johns of Bloomington IN, three brothers Jim (Georgia) Johns of Pittsburgh, PA, Geary (Kathy) Johns of Charles Town WV, and Gregg ( Annette) Johns of Pittsburgh PA, one sister Jennifer Devine of McMurray PA, and three grandchildren Cason Connelly and Ava and Jaxon Sonney. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Harold W. Stevenson Funeral Home LLC, 264 E. State Street, Sharon, PA,16146. A funeral service will be held on Monday at 11:00 am at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 263 E. State Street , Sharon, PA, 16146 with the Rev. Rick Stauffer officiating. Burial will follow in Morefield Cemetery.
