Gertrude C. Turner, , of John XXIII Home, Hermitage, formerly of Second Ave., Sharon, PA , passed away of natural causes on Friday, November 16, 2012 in Sharon Regional Health System. She was 88.
Gertrude was born in Scranton, PA on March 7, 1924, the daughter of the late Floyd and Clara (Pace) Cornell. She served in stateside in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman Ist Class during WW II. She moved to this area following her marriage to Howard D. Turner, in Asbury Methodist Church, Scranton, PA, on Nov. 10, 1945. He passed away on Jan. 11, 2003.
She was a homemaker for most of her life, but in younger years, she was employed by the former Credit Union in downtown Sharon.
Gertrude served as President of the Sharon American Legion, Post 299, Women's Auxillary from 1960-1963. She and her late husband were avid bowlers, participating in leagues at Thornton Hall, Sunset Lanes, and the former Hickory Bowl. She was a very talented seamstress and enjoyed needlework of all kinds.
She is survived by her son, Bruce Turner and his wife, Laurie, of Sharon, PA. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Besides her parents, and her husband, she was preceeded in death by her three sisters, Vernice Gladys, Gladys Greene, and Shirley Seeru, and one brother, Floyd Cornell.
