George W. Burns Sr., of Greenville, formerly of Hermitage and West Middlesex, PA, passed away on Dec. 14, 2016 at 1:10 a.m. at The Groves of Greenville, after an extended illness. He was 86.
George was born in Wheatland, PA on July 4, 1930, the son of the late Joseph and Guida (Phillips) Burns. After graduating high school, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1954.
He had worked in plant protection at the former Sawhill Tubular Products (now AK Steel) for 42 years.
In his younger years, George enjoyed playing softball and playing baseball in the Oldtimers Baseball League. He attended the Wheatland-Farrell Methodist Church
George married Geraldine (Wedlake) Burns on July 20, 1956. She died Jan. 30, 2011. He is survived by his daughter, Sara Phillips and her husband Daniel, of Seminole, FL, his sons, Ed Hittle and his wife Vivian, of Canton, OH, Michael Burns of Stuart, FL, and George W. Burns Jr. and his companion Cindi, of Mercer, PA along with his 6 grandchildren, Adam , George, and Jason Burns, Nicki Bonasera, Emily and Michael Burns and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his sisters, Sara Koches of Masury, OH.,and Rose Morton of West Middlesex, PA, and his brother, Joseph Burns of Wheatland, PA.
At his request, there will be no calling hours. Cremation has taken place.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Charles Eckles of IHS Gospel Ministries officiating at Harold W. Stevenson Funeral Home, 264 East State St., Sharon, PA 16146.
