Dr. David A. Vermeire, of Hermitage, PA., passed away peacefully on Thursday , October 18th, 2018 at the age of 89.
He was born in Farrell, PA on January 20, 1929, to George and Mary Vermeire. A graduate of Farrell High School, Class of 1947, he received his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Pittsburgh in 1954. After serving as a flight surgeon and captain in the United States Air Force, he returned to Farrell in 1957 and entered family practice. In 1964, he accepted the position of Associate Medical Director for Trans World Airlines in Kansas City, MO. He left TWA in 1972 to begin a residency in Orthopedic Surgery at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City. Upon completion of his residency in 1975, he returned to Hermitage and began practice as an Orthopedic Surgeon. After scaling back his workload in 2004, he retired completely in 2011.
David touched many lives and was a deeply-caring member of the community. He served on the board of the Hermitage School District and served as a team physician for the Hickory High School football team. A lifelong music lover, he sang in the Shenango Valley Chorale and the choir of First Presbyterian Church of Sharon where he was a long-time member and Elder. He was an avid tennis player and played often Buhl Park. He enjoyed traveling and visited many countries, as well as many destinations in the U.S. He and his wife, Nancy, maintained residences in both Hermitage and Clermont, Florida in retirement.
Most of all, David loved his family and looked for any opportunity to spend time with them. He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy, sons, David, Daniel, Drew, Dean and Jeffrey, step-children Karen Shaffer, James Dennison, Cheryl Rueberger, and Heather Kaboly, seventeen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Harry and Calvin Vermeire.
A Memorial Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Sharon on November 17, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation with friends and family begins at 10:00 a.m. in the church. In leu of flowers, family requests donation be made to Buhl Farm Park, the Shenango Valley Chorale, and the First Presbyterian Church of Sharon
