We give thanks to God for the life of Alberta "Bert" (Hornyak) Sabo, of Sterling Heights, MI, formerly of Hermitage and Sharon, PA. She passed away peacefully in Michigan, surrounded by her family and went to be with her Lord on Friday, Nov. 8, 2013. She was 91.
Bert was born in Pittsburgh, PA on April 1, 1922, the daughter of the late Michael and Anna (Kovach) Hornyak, and graduated from Homestead High School. During her single years, she enjoyed working at National Biscuit Company stuffing boxes with crackers for the soldiers. She married Edward "Ed" Sabo on August 4, 1946, and were married for 58 years until his death on Jan. 17, 2004. After their marriage began , they moved to Sharon and family became the main focus of her life as God blessed her to become the mother of three children, Bruce Sabo and his wife, Kathy, of Macomb twp., MI, Rebecca Morgan and her husband, Robert, of Wendell, NC, and Miriam Ives and her husband, Richard, of Sterling Heights, MI. and grandmother to Keith Ives and his wife, Dana, Nathan Morgan, Brett Oates and her husband, Richard, and Caleb Sabo and his wife, Carrie, along with 8 great grandchildren.
She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Sharon, for over 50 years, serving in many capacities. Throughout her lifetime, Bert was a faithful Christian and selflessly devoted her time to serving others. She especially loved getting together with the ladies in the Ruth Circle group for fun, fellowship and service.
Cooking was a favorite past time of Bert's. She always was in the kitchen putting her love into everything she made. Her signature dishes were halupki (stuffed cabbage) and potato dumplings. She also was a very talented seamstress. A high point in her life was the trip of a lifetime to visit her parent's birthplace in Czechoslovakia with her dear cousin, Mary. During Bert's entire life, she worked hard, served the Lord faithfully, and set a Christian example to all who knew her. Her strong will served her well and was evident until her last breath. She will be especially missed by her family, but they will take comfort in knowing that she is now dwelling in her heavenly room that God prepared for her as promised in John 14:2
